The
P-47 Thunderbolt or "Jug" (short for Juggernaut) was built in
the later part of the war as a multi-purpose fighter. It was built around
the famous Pratt & Whitney R-2800 turbo supercharged 18 cylinder engine,
an engine that served in so many American planes. The P47 was a truly vast
aircraft, it was bigger than any other single engined propellor fighter
in World War II, and was produced in greater numbers than any other American
fighter (even the P-51 mustang).
While it was fast, carried ample armament, and was incredibly tough, the
P-47 was initially met with little enthusiasm, This was soon to change as
it found a home as the premier ground-attack fighter of the war, its eight
0.50" calibre (12mm) machine guns could deliver a powerful punch, and
together with its wide array of weapon payloads it was the terror of retreating
armour columns and trains.
With the addition of external fuel tanks P47s could easily escort the American
bombers to their targets in Germany and safely back home to base.
